Theme: Merpeople

Merpeople refers to humans that live in the sea. The most common version of these is the mermaid who is commonly seen as having the head of a woman and the tail of a fish. The male equivalent is a merman.

Merpeople can both swim underwater and walk on land. (When a merperson has a tail, this will disappear once they gain legs). In some cases there may be conditions attached to this such as the periodic need to return to water. They may have control over the aquatic environment and/or be able to communicate with fish. Sometimes it is believed that the survivors of Atlantis evolved to become merpeople.

Films about merpeople can range from Fairytale Films to light fantasy comedies and romances about mermaids. From the 2000s onwards, there has been a body of horror films and dark fantasies about mermaids. There are also merpeople superheroes as evident by tv’s Man from Atlantis (1977), DC’s Aquaman and Marvel’s Namor.
