Jim Wynorski has been a prolific B movie director since the 1980s. Wynorski started out just as the video market arrived the 1980s and has made over a hundred films since then. (See below for a full list of Jim Wynorski’s other genre films). He almost always works within genre material, making horror, action and science-fiction films, often with tongue planted in cheek. Most common has been Wynorski’s dabbling in softcore erotica – all of his films make a virtue of featuring pneumatically inflated women and he was one of the directors prominently associated with the late 1980s/early 90s Scream Queen fad. He has been a frequent contributor to the softcore parody film beginning with the popular The Bare Wench Project (1999) and has put out titles such as The Witches of Breastwick (2005), The Breastford Wives (2007), The Da Vinci Co-ed (2007) and Cleavegefield (2008), among others.
The concept of Attack of the 50 Foot Camgirl is all in the title. Wynorski has taken the Z-budget 1950s film Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958) and cast it as one of his bimbo comedies. In the same regard, Wynorski collaborator Fred Olen Ray had previously made Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfolds (1995), while there had also been Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader (2012). The film is surprisingly faithful to the 1958 original – Allison Hayes’s character has gone from a rich heiress to a cam girl (Ivy Smith) with a substantial following who is manipulated by a no-good husband (Eli Cirino) who is fooling round with the assistant (Christine Nguyen). There are no aliens this time but Ivy is turned into a giant by eating untested genetically modified food.
The main problem with Attack of the 50 Foot Camgirl is that with the casting of Ivy Smith, the role of the Fifty Foot Woman is now played as a bimbo airhead, something you would never have said of Allison Hayes in the original. The original Attack of the 50 Foot Woman was a comeuppance fantasy where a downtrodden wife wreaks her revenge after being turned giant-size. Here it is hard to have the necessary sympathy for the character when she is portrayed as an idiot, only obsessed with her ratings and looking good, while we are constantly distracted by her in and out of her clothing. Not to mention Ivy Smith is a bad actress and all her lines fall flat – although at least the others present rise to a level of professional competence.
Ivy Smith as Beverly the 50 Foot cam girl
Jim Wynorski makes bimbo films that are cast with well-stacked women with silicone implants where they regularly take their tops to display their wares. Perhaps being a Charles Band production, Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl is somewhat tame in this regard. Ivy Smith takes her top off a couple of times and both she and Christine Nguyen get shower scenes at various points. On the other hand, a scene where Lisa London decides to seduce a sleeping Ivy fades to black and does not turn into the softcore love scene that you expect it to.
Attack of the 50 Foot Camgirl does have the benefit of a sense of humour. Christine Nguyen comes out with lines like “I’m a social media hungry millennial and you want me to be rational?” One of the absurdities of the film is that when Ivy Smith becomes a Fifty Foot Woman, so too does her clothing including giant-size heels, fishnets, mini-skirts, bras and shorts. The ending also amusingly subverts 50 Foot Woman and has Christine Nguyen turn giantess too for a bitch fight with Ivy Smith, which ends when the two women grab the cheating husband and squish him to death by placing him between their cleavages and grinding their chests together.
On the plus side, Wynorski has been able to obtain the use of a lavish looking designer home to shoot the film, which looks impressively spacious in its layout. The special effects and model work are surprisingly not bad for a B-budgeted film like this.
Jim Wynorski and Ivy Smith returned with a sequel Giantess Battle Attack (2022).
